Bennie Gonzales was our native-son architect, someone with an eye and a design voice uniquely about, and from, Arizona. He was a prolific architect completing over 300 projects, notably among these are the Scottsdale Civic complex, still very much in use today. But of all his designs, his homes representing desert living, stand out. The spaces are remarkable, approachable and the proportions spot on.  Gonzales brought meaning to his design choices such as his flat wall scuppers or “canales”, they were not merely decoration, these channels were roof drains, lined in glass tile, allowing the water to shimmer as it rains. In dry weather, they become a remembrance of water in the desert.
