Description

This project is deeply personal to its owners, Debbie and Scott Jarson, who nurtured the dream of building a home on their piece of land in Paradise Valley for over a decade before it became a reality. Situated along the edge of a desert wash, the Jarson Residence—designed by architect Will Bruder, FAIA—is a compelling example of site-sensitive modern architecture.

Understanding the Jarsons’ profound appreciation for both contemporary design and the Sonoran Desert, Bruder conceived a modest yet expressive home that harmonizes with the natural terrain. Clad in weathered steel and copper, the structure presents a sculptural form, with a simple shed roof and deep overhangs that serve both functional and aesthetic purposes.

The home’s upper level offers a gallery-like entry, leading to private areas such as bedrooms and an office. The lower level opens into expansive communal spaces, including living and dining areas, a media/music room, and an art studio. The Jarsons selected elemental materials—cork and concrete flooring, translucent glass walls, walnut, and stainless steel—to create a warm, tactile environment that blurs the line between everyday life and art.

Nestled against the Phoenix Mountain Preserves, the home feels like a natural extension of the desert itself, offering a serene retreat that reflects the architectural spirit of Arizona: one rooted in innovation, material honesty, and deep environmental connection. The ever-changing desert light and shifting seasons are constant sources of inspiration, reminding the Jarsons daily of the unique beauty of their home and its place in the landscape.
