Hummingbird —William P. Bruder FAIA Architect

This stunning design by Will Bruder is easily recognized as one of his finest and is celebrated internationally. Included in numerous publications, this significant home has been beautifully restored and certainly is one of the most expressive celebrations of architecture in the region. A delightful play of light and form, the materials include a palette of colored resins, glass, steel, concrete and metals.  The hillside site in Paradise Valley offers a superb view-panorama nestled in the eastern saddle of Mummy Mountain.

The home is fully automated and offers unique controls and audio visual detailing. The Courtyard includes a custom commissioned sculpture collaboration design by artist Mayme Kratz and Architect Mark Ryan. The Bedroom wing was seamlessly expanded with the assistance of Jack Debartelo III/Debartleo Architects.

Originally known as the Townsend Residence, there is generous space with three bedrooms, den/library/office, bonus room or guest and lower retreat.  A translucent fiberglass screened motor court accommodating a three car garage. Designed to accommodate a desert lifestyle that emphasizes indoor/outdoor relationships, as well as a showcase for extensive art and modern furniture collections, the home incorporates five intertwined circles and crisp, curvilinear geometry. Screened from the street, the approach to the home features a canyon-like space that echoes the surrounding natural mountain forms. Visitors enter through an impressive 7’6” pivoting glass door under a custom aluminum canopy. Once inside, the curving concrete masonry opens to reveal dramatic and impressive distant views and a commanding panorama of Paradise Valley to the north.

Sculpted processional of interior wall forms draw the eye through an ever-changing series of interior volumes, ending in a 310’ arc of glass. A dance of natural light floats in and out of the spaces, assisted by dozens of strategically placed glass and resin window squares enhancing subtle and unique view vignettes. Interior walls are further enhanced with hand applied smooth reflective plasters.

Hacienda Alta – R.T. Evans Architect 1929 Adobe

This historic home is located along the “Adobe Corridor” of Camelback Road adjacent to the original Jokake Inn. Designed by Architect R.T. Evans, it was constructed in 1929 by the grandparents of the current owners. Over 1.5 acres, this property is located on the third tee of the Phoenician Resort’s Canyon Golf Course and offers 3 bedrooms in the main house plus an attached guest casita. The natural desert grounds look out to romantic views of Camelback Mountain that are simply profound.  Thankfully this home has been maintained in remarkably original condition, with few unnecessary modifications.

All the original design elements are retained and the details are superb. It is a unique Spanish Eclectic home that contains design elements influenced by Pueblo Revival and Monterey designs of the period.  In addition to the massive Adobe Construction of the main house, the interior wood work is mostly original redwood, with hardware intact. The floors are mostly original wood and integral red concrete. The home now offers central HVAC, recently installed.

Architect R.T. Evans is well known for his work in the valley, most notably the adjacent Jokake Inn, the Kellogg House (Now Casa Blanca) and the recently restored Eisendrath House located at Papago Park.  This well documented home is a rare survivor in an area known for it’s gracious past and definitive history that married climate, winter visitors, Arcadia-area citrus production and the very early formation of our Valley’s tourist and destination industries. The immediate surroundings offer a deep collection of restored historic adobe homes.

Pinnacle Peak Modern – Al Beadle Architect

This delightful Modern home was design by Architect Alfred Newman Beadle and offers a recent interiors update by Elizabeth Rosensteel Designs. We are delighted to re-introduce it as one of Beadle finest works.  Remarkable for its integrity; the home offers four bedrooms plus office in the main house, and an attached two-bedroom guest suite. The original owners fully updated the master suite and the world-class contemporary kitchen is fully modern with Snaidero cabinets and top-tier appliances. In addition to the guest house, there’s abundant storage including 3-car garage and workout room.  The deep patio opens to a falling-edge pool, spa and N/S Tennis Court that’s perfect for entertaining.  You’ll love this five-acre desert lot with views of Troon, Pinnacle Peak and a vista of city lights.

Some unique history: Originally designed by Beadle, who was given a carte blanche for the design, the home subsequently went unrecognized due to a disagreement regarding finishes. Ironically, the home is a magnificent design from a period in Mr. Beadle’s career that saw some of his most interesting work, and is a wonderful desert modern house that has been brought increasingly in line with the Architect’s original expectations. The Y-shaped plan is highly unique and makes the home a work of landscape art. A home of this caliber and provenance is a rare find, and certainly irreplaceable.  ALL IMAGES COPYRIGHT – All rights reserved.
