During the ate 19th Century, a few women artists traveled to Japan – individually and often unescorted – to learn the art and culture of Japan. It was a land that had just opened to Western trade and travel in 1854. New steam powered ships as well as they completion of the Suez Canal in 1869 made the ocean voyage safer and faster. So by the end of the century, it was possible for artists and adventurers to visit the mysterious East.
This exhibition is supported bu the Japan Foundation and Friends of the ASU Art Museum.
