Description

HOT NEW LISTING AND A RARE FIND!  Designed by Blaine Drake in 1964, this remarkable Camelback Mountain area home offers true Mid-Century Desert Modern Design. With a wonderfully generous floorplan and incredible Mountain and City light views, this classic home nestles in the Camelback Mountain foothills on a gently elevated acre lot. The Hawkins House was designed and built in 1963-1964 and figured prominently in Drake’s 1992 Exhibition “40 Years of Architecture In Arizona” which was presented at ASU. A completely custom luxury home, it includes amenities often unseen in this architectural era. Recent updating of mechanicals, plumbing, appliances, flooring, paint and electrical insure this home is ready to enjoy today. For anyone interested in Mid-Century Modern Design, this home presents a unique example!

The house is masonry construction showcasing a high level of craftsmanship with details that include a custom steel facia, mahogany millwork and custom built-ins. A curved “loggia” follows the path to the entry providing detail, shadow and a covered respite from the elements. Nearly original save for thoughtful and updates and improvements,  the plan has remained unchanged. Floor to ceiling glass and doors connect the home solidly to the outdoors, yet all are sheltered with generous overhangs that make this home desert-appropriate modernism.

The Master suite is particularly generous, with a large walk-in closet and en-suite bath. The Office/Den features walnut built-ins. The living room is open to dining, anchored by a masonry fireplace. Three additional bedrooms are offered, one with en-suite bath.

This corner acre property includes natural gas service and sports a circular drive for easy access from both Saddle Rock Lane and Rockridge Drive. There is ample storage, two-car carport and bonus shop/studio/storage room.

In a time where many of Drake’s designs became more rectangularly geometric, this home is wonderfully unique in that the home consists two intersecting arcs. Each arc plays a functional part in the design; one housing living spaces with a generous master suite and office, the other connects with additional bedrooms, service area and carport. Each arc allows the home to embrace a particular view selected by the architect to be celebrated by the occupants.

About The Architect:

Blaine Drake was one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s original apprentices at Taliesin, Wisconsin, in 1933, and went on to establish his Arizona practice in 1945. He designed approximately two hundred projects during his long career, nearly two-thirds of which were built. Most of his work was in the Phoenix area and focused on residential architecture, though he also designed office, medical, and apartment buildings and churches. One of the few Wright apprentices to pursue a successful independent practice, Drake was an advocate of energy-efficient design in the desert. He received national and international recognition for his work. Blaine Drake retired from architectural practice in 1985.
